Description of Span 60

Sorbitan monostearate is an ester of sorbitan (a sorbitol derivative) and stearic acid and is sometimes referred to as a synthetic wax. It is primarily used as an emulsifier to keep water and oils mixed. Sorbitan monostearate is used in the manufacture of food and healthcare products and is a non-ionic surfactant with emulsifying, dispersing, and wetting properties. It is also employed to create synthetic fibers, metal machining fluid, and brighteners in the leather industry, and as an emulsifier in coatings, pesticides, and various applications in the plastics, food and cosmetics industries. Sorbitans are also known as “Spans”.
Sorbitan monostearate has been approved by the European Union for use as a food additive (emulsifier) (E number: E 491)

The official answer: Sorbitan monostearate is an organic compound with the molecular formula C24H46O6. The pure product is beige flakes or brownish-yellow wax. Nontoxic. The relative density is 0.98~1.03. Insoluble in cold water, glycerol, ethanol, isopropanol, paraffin oil, soybean oil and lard. Forms a gel in hot water, dispersible in hot glycerin, and cloudy in hot xylene. It is a non-ionic surfactant. It is a water-in-oil emulsifier. The oral LD50 of the mice was more than 15000 mg/kg, and the ADI value was 0-25 mg/kg. It is obtained by esterification of stearic acid and sorbitol in the presence of sodium hydroxide, followed by bleaching and slicing. It is used as emulsifier and defoamer in pesticides, plastics, cosmetics, medicine, coatings, textiles, food and other industries.
