Description of PERIODIC ACID
- Periodic acid, also known as periodate, is an oxygenated acid of iodine (VII) and is available in two forms with the chemical formulas HIO4 and H5IO6. H+ and IO4- ions are present in dilute solutions of periodate. As the concentration increases, the periodate starts to exist in the form of ortho-periodic acid H5IO6, which can be precipitated from the solution as crystals. The dehydration of ortho-hyperiodic acid yields meta-hyperiodic acid HIO4, and further dehydration yields diiodine heptaoxide (colorless viscous liquid), which decomposes to give diiodine pentoxide (I2O5) and oxygen. Ortho- and metaiodic acid can produce salts called “ortho- and metaiodic acid salts”, respectively. The solubility and chemical properties of meta-periodate are similar to those of perchlorate, a homologous halogen, but the anion radius is larger and the oxidation is weaker. In organic chemistry, periodate oxidizes o-diol and breaks the carbon-carbon bond to produce two aldehydes, which are used to determine the structure of sugars.
