What is NA?

- The official answer: The main component of niobium iron is a ferroalloy of niobium and iron. It also contains impurities such as aluminum, silicon, carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus. According to the niobium content of the alloy, it is divided into FeNb50, FeNb60, FeNb70. Ferroalloys produced from niobium tantalum ore contain tantalum, called niobium tantalum. Vacuum smelting iron-based alloys and nickel-based alloys use ferro niobium and niobium nickel alloys as niobium additives. It is required that the gas content is low and the harmful impurities are low, such as Pb, Sb, Bi, Sn, As, etc. are < 2×10, so they are called “VQ” (vacuum quality), such as VQFeNb, VQNiNb and so on. Niobium manganese ferroalloy (Nb10%~15%) produced in China is used as an alloying agent for low-alloy steels and niobium treatment agents for carbon steels.
What’s the application of NA?
- Ferrobium is used for smelting high-temperature (heat-resistant) alloys, stainless steels and high-strength low-alloy steels. Niobium is produced in stainless steel and heat-resistant steel, with the carbon in the steel to form a stable niobium carbide. It is distributed in the grain boundary of the steel, preventing the grain growth of the steel at high temperature, and playing a refining role in the structure of the steel, which can improve the strength, toughness and creep performance of the steel. The chemical affinity of niobium and carbon is much greater than that of chromium and carbon, so when niobium is present in stainless steel, it can prevent the precipitation of chromium carbide at the grain boundary of the steel, thereby improving the corrosion resistance of the steel. The niobium and nitrogen in the steel form stable niobium nitride, which improves the corrosion resistance of the surface layer of the steel. The niobium in the steel and oxygen form a stable niobium oxide, so that the surface of the steel forms a niobium oxide film, which can prevent the oxygen from spreading and have an antioxidant effect. Carbon steel adds Nb 0.015% to 0.05%, which can play a role in refining the microstructure and making the steel have good formability and welding properties. Niobium has a strong inhibitory effect on the austenitic recrystallization of steel, so that steel can control rolling at higher temperatures, and the strong toughening effect of controlling rolling is very significant. Thus, the amount of niobium as a micro-alloying element in carbon steel has been increased. The amount of niobium used in microalloys in the United States accounted for only 1.9% of total niobium consumption in 1959, rising to 68% in 1988.
