What is Iridium?

With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, chemical products have invariably permeated our daily lives, in medicine, food, cosmetics, electronics, industry, and other areas, becoming an essential part of our lives. One such product is Iridiumwhich has developed particularly rapidly in recent years. Do you know about Iridium?

The official answer: Iridium, metallic element, element symbol Ir, atomic number 77, atomic weight 192.22, element name derived from Latin, meaning “rainbow”. Iridium is found in 10 millionths of a crust and is often dispersed with platinum in various ores in alluvial and arsaris deposits.
In 1803, when the British chemist Smithson Tenant and the French chemist Descoti dissolved crude platinum with aqua regia, two new elements were found from the black powder remaining at the bottom of the vessel- osmium and iridium. There are two isotopes in nature: iridium-191 and iridium-193. The artificial radioisotope 192Ir is obtained by the stable element 191Ir by neutron radiation. Decay emits γ rays with a half-life of 74.2d, which is used for industrial flaw detection.

What’s the application of Iridium?

Iridium applications use its high melting point, high hardness and corrosion resistance properties. Iridium metals, as well as iridium-platinum alloys and osmium-iridium alloys, have very low wear and tear and can be used to make porous spinnerets. Spindle spray boards are used to extrude plastic polymers into fibers, such as rayon. Osmium-iridium alloys can also be used for compass bearings and weighing scales.
Iridium is resistant to corrosion and high temperatures, so it is very suitable as an alloy additive. Some long-standing parts in plane engines are made up of iridium alloys, and iridium-titanium alloys are also used as underwater pipe materials. The addition of iridium can increase the hardness of platinum alloys. Pure platinum has a Vickers hardness of 56 HV, while platinum alloys containing 50% iridium can exceed 500 HV.
Iridium is also used in instruments that have to withstand high temperatures. For example, the Zykolaski method uses iridium to make high-temperature crucibles to produce individual oxide crystals such as sapphire, gadolinium gallium garnet, and yttrium aluminum garnet. These crystals are used in computer memory and solid-state laser parts. Iridium alloys are resistant to arc erosion and are thus ideal materials for spark plug electrical contacts.
Cativa catalysis is the conversion of methanol into acetic acid, using iridium compounds as catalysts.
The radioisotope iridium-192 is an important energy source in γ radiography, aiding non-destructive testing of metals. Besides, brachytherapy uses γ rays released by 192Ir to treat cancer. This treatment, which places the radiation source near or inside the cancerous tissue, can be used to treat prostate, cholangiocarcinoma, and cervical cancer.
