Holmium oxide, also known as Holmium(III) oxide, is a combination of rare earth elements Holmium and oxygen, and dysprosium oxide, one of the most paramagnetic substances known. Holmium oxide is a component of erbium oxide minerals. In nature, Holmium oxide often coexists with trivalent oxides of lanthanide, and special methods are needed to separate it. Holmium oxide can be used to make glass of special color. The visible absorption spectra of glasses and solutions containing holmium oxide have a series of sharp peaks and are thus used as a calibration standard for spectrometers.
