It obtains the oxide Er2O3 as rose red and is used to make pottery glaze. The use of erbium oxide in the ceramics industry produces a pink enamel. Erbium also has some applications in the nuclear industry and can also be used as an alloy component of other metals. For example, the incorporation of erbium into vanadium can enhance its ductility.
The most prominent use of erbium is in the manufacture of Erbium Dopant Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) was first developed by the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom in 1985, it is one of the greatest inventions of optical fiber communication, and can even be said to be the “gas station” of today’s long-distance information highway. Erbium-doped fibers are quartz fibers that incorporate a small amount of the rare earth element erbium ions (Er3+) into the quartz fibers, which is the heart of the amplifier. The principle of erbium-doped fiber amplification of optical signals is that when Er3+ is excited by light with a wavelength of 980 nm or 1480 nm to absorb the energy of the pump light, it transitions from the ground state to the pump state of the high energy level. Because the life of particles in the pump state is very short, they move from the pump state to the metastable state in a non-radiative manner, and the particles have a long life in this energy and accumulate. When 1550 nm of signal light passes through, the metastable Er3+ ion transitions to the ground state in the form of stimulated radiation, and also emits light at a wavelength of 1550 nm. This light emitted when jumping from the high-energy state to the ground state supplements the signal light lost by attenuation, so that the signal light is amplified as it decays during the propagation of the fiber.
