It forms a complex with DNA, thus preventing the replication of DNA and the transcription of RNA.

Chloroquine phosphate is used for the treatment of chloroquine-sensitive P. falciparum, P. interna and P. tris. It is also used for the suppressive prophylaxis of malaria symptoms.
