Physiological function
Bismuth is a micro-toxic genus. Most compounds, especially salt-based salts, are difficult to absorb in the digestive tract. Insoluble in water, only soluble in tissue fluid. Cannot be absorbed through the intact skin mucosa. Bismuth is absorbed and distributed throughout the body, with the kidneys being the most many and the liver being the second. Most of the bismuth stored in the body is excreted by the urine within weeks or even months.
Bismuth is metabolized in the body like lead. In lead poisoning, tissues can release accumulated bismuth. Bismuth and lead can interact with each other. In the body, bismuth compounds can form bismuth sulfide, which is not soluble in water and dilute acids, precipitates in tissues or embolizes in capillaries, local ulcers occur, and even necrosis occurs. Bismuth nitrate can be reduced to bismuth nitrite under the action of bacteria in the intestine, which causes methemoglobinemia after absorption. In severe chronic poisoning, severe nephritis can occur due to the presence of bismuth in the kidneys, of which the damage to tubular epithelial cells is the most severe, and the liver can also be affected. Patients with repeated oral or otherwise chronic poisoning may have “bismuth lines”.
Occupational poisoning caused by inhalation of bismuth and its compounds has not been seen. Chronic poisoning is caused by drugs containing soluble bismuth salts. Intravenous or intramuscular soluble bismuth salts have been reported to cause death.
People with skin damage should avoid direct contact with soluble bismuth salts. Sodium dimercaptopropanesulfonate can be used as an antidote.
