What is Argon?

  • The official answer: Argon is a colorless, odorless, single-atom gas with a relative atomic mass of 39.948. Generally, after being liquefied by air, argon is taken by fractional distillation method. Argon is 1.4 times denser than air and 10 times more dense than helium. Argon is an inert gas that does not react with other substances at room temperature, is not soluble in liquid metals at high temperatures, and can show its superiority when welding non-ferrous metals. It can be used for bulb inflation and arc welding of stainless steel, magnesium, aluminum, etc., that is, “argon arc welding”.

What’s the application of Argon?

Argon is a noble gas used in industry. Its nature is very inactive, neither combustible nor incendiary. In the plane manufacturing, shipbuilding, atomic energy industry and machinery industry sector, special metals such as aluminum, magnesium, copper and their alloys and stainless steel are often welded with argon as a welding protective gas to prevent weldments from being oxidized or nitrided by air.
(1) Aluminum. Used to replace air or nitrogen, creating an inert atmosphere during the manufacture of aluminum; Helps remove unwanted soluble gases during the degassing process; as well as removing dissolved hydrogen and other particles from molten aluminum.
(2) Steelmaking. For displacing gases or vapours and preventing oxidation in the process; Used to stir molten steel to maintain a constant temperature and the same composition; Helps remove unwanted soluble gases during the degassing process; As a carrier gas, argon can be used by chromatography to determine the composition of the sample; Argon can also be used in argon oxygen decarburization processes (AOD) used in stainless steel refining to remove carbon monoxide and reduce chromium losses.
(3) Metal processing. Argon is used as an inert protective gas in welding; Provide oxygen-free nitrogen-free protection in annealing and rolling of metals and alloys; as well as for flushing molten metal to end porosity in castings. (4) Welding protective gas. Argon acts as a shielding gas during the welding process, which avoids the burn loss of alloying elements and other welding defects resulting therefrom, making the metallurgical reaction during the welding process simple and easy to control to ensure the high quality of the welding. [4] The mechanism of porosity in the remelting zone of specimens under different atmosphere protection conditions was studied by laser remelting test of HT250 gray cast iron. The results show that under the protective condition of argon, the stomata in the remelting zone are precipitated stomatals. Under open conditions, the stomatals in the remelting zone are precipitated stomatals and reactive stomatals.
(5) Other uses. Electronics, lighting, argon knives, etc.
