It was first obtained by hydrolysis of spermaceti. In industry, it can be reduced by oils or fats or sodium borohydride to reduce hexadecanoyl chloride. Natural fats and oils are usually used as raw materials through esterification, high-pressure hydrogenation to make mixed fatty alcohols, and then rectification to produce 1-hexadecanol.
