Description of Piperonyl butoxide
Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is an organic compound used as a component of pesticide formulations. It is a waxy white solid. It is a synergist. That is, despite having no pesticidal activity of its own, it enhances the potency of certain pesticides such as carbamates, pyrethrins, pyrethroids, and rotenone. It is a semisynthetic derivative of safrole.

What is Piperonyl butoxide?
With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, chemical products have invariably permeated our daily lives, in medicine, food, cosmetics, electronics, industry, and other areas, becoming an essential part of our lives. One such product is Piperonyl butoxide which has developed particularly rapidly in recent years. Do you know about Piperonyl butoxide?
The official answer: Piperonyl butoxide, abbreviated ENT -14250, is a colorless to light yellow oily transparent liquid. It has a slightly peculiar odor and bitter taste. Relative density 1.059, refractive index 1.50, flash point 171ºC (open cup). Easily discolored when exposed to light. Insoluble in water, miscible with methanol, ethanol, benzene, freon, grease, and other organic solvents. Acute oral LD50 11500mg/kg in rats, acute percutaneous LD50 1880mg/kg in rabbits, non-carcinogenic.
What’s the application of Piperonyl butoxide?
It is used as an insecticide to kill insects produced during the storage of rice, wheat, beans, and other grains, such as grain weevils. Often used in combination with pyrethrins to form complexes for synergistic effects. It is used as an insecticide synergist. It can improve the insecticidal activity of pyrethrins and various pyrethroids, rotenone, and carbamate insecticides.
The synergistic ether can improve the insecticidal activity of pyrethrins and various pyrethroids, rotenone, and carbamate insecticides, and also has a synergistic effect on fenitrothion, dichlorvos, chlordane, triclopyr, atrazine, etc., and can improve the stability of pyrethrum infusion. It has a higher synergistic effect on aminopyralid than octadecafluoro when it is used in housefly control; however, it cannot synergize cypermethrin in knockdown effect on houseflies. When used in mosquito coils, it has no synergistic effect on cypermethrin, and even its efficacy is reduced.
Efficacy and use: When pyrethrin 0.025g is contained in 100ml of refined kerosene alone, the mortality rate of house flies is only 19%, 32% when 0.050g is contained and 50% when 0.100g is contained, and the mortality rate of house flies can be as high as 85% when pyrethrin 0.025g + 0.25g of this product is contained in 100ml of kerosene. In the lice control test, when the preparation contains pyrethrin 0.005% and this product 0.05%, the mortality rate of body lice is 78%; if it contains pyrethrin 0.025% and this product 0.125%, the mortality rate of body lice can reach 100%, but in the treatment containing pyrethrin alone, the mortality rate of body lice is all 0. Using this product as a highly effective agent for controlling sanitary insects, warehouse pests, and horticultural pests as an insecticide, generally It is used 5 to 10 times as much as pyrethrins, which can increase the efficacy by 3 times, and the effect is remarkable. For example, in the storage of grain, use the mixture of this product (1:10) with cyhalothrin to control a variety of warehouse pests, and one application can protect the stored grain from pests for about one year. For agricultural pests such as cotton bollworms, this product is used in combination with cypermethrin, cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, and cyhalothrin respectively, and the efficiency index reaches 230, 167, 80, and 65.7, which is also very significant.
Toxicity of synergistic ether: acute oral LD50 for rats and rabbits >7.5g/kg; acute percutaneous LD50 for rabbits is 1.88g/kg, acute percutaneous LD50 for rats >7950mg/kg, no irritation to skin and eyes, no sensitizing effect on the skin. Acute inhalation LC50 for rats >5.9mg/L. No effect dose in feeding test: 30mg/kg BW-d for rats and mice (2 years), 16mg/kg BW-d for dogs (1 year). ADI for human is 0.2mg/kg bw. No teratogenicity, no mutagenicity, no carcinogenicity. No harmful effects were observed in rats fed with feed containing 10g/kg of this product per day for 3 generations. It is not toxic to fish and bees. The acute oral LD50 for quail was >2250mg/kg. carp LC50(24h) was 5.3mg/L. honeybee LD50 was >25μg/bee. Daphnia LC50(24h) 2.95mg/L.
