Octenylsuccinic anhydride consists of an unsaturated olefin backbone linked to succinic anhydride. In the first step, the unsaturated straight-chain or branched olefins (A-olefins) are isomerized by a double bond shift, i.e., the A-olefins are isomerized to endo-olefins. This product is a highly reactive sizing agent. The rate of hydrolysis and the half-life of activity are very short.
