Benzyl alcohol is an extremely useful fragrance fixing agent and is indispensable in the preparation of jasmine, under-the-moon, and ylang-ylang fragrances. It is used in the formulation of soaps; daily make-up fragrances. But benzyl alcohol can be slowly natural oxidation, part of the generation of benzaldehyde and benzyl ether, so that commercially available products often with almond fragrance, so should not be stored for a long time. Benzyl alcohol is widely used in the production of industrial chemicals. It is used as a solvent for paints; a photographic developer; a stabilizing Chemicalbook agent for polyvinyl chloride; a pharmaceutical; a solvent for synthetic resins; a solvent for vitamin b injections; and a preservative for ointments or pharmaceutical solutions. It can be used as nylon silk; desiccant for fiber and plastic film, dye; cellulose ester; solvent for casein, intermediate for making benzyl ester or ether. It is also widely used in the production of pens (biros oil); paint solvents, etc. GB2760–1996 stipulates that it is temporarily allowed to be used as an edible spice.

Benzyl alcohol is used as a preservative for ointment, desiccant for fiber, nylon silk and plastic film, stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride, photographic developer, solvent for acetate, ink, paint, paint, epoxy resin paint, dyestuff, casein, shellac, and gelatin, intermediate for making benzyl ester or ether. It is also used to make fragrances and flavorings (mostly benzyl alcohol esters of fatty acids) for use as additives in soaps, perfumes, cosmetics, and other products. Used as a discriminator between quartz and wool fibers as it has almost the same refractive index as quartz and wool fibers. The hydroxyl group of benzyl alcohol is very active in the fragrance industry and it can react with benzene to form diphenylmethane, with acrylonitrile to form N-benzylacrylamide (Ritter reaction), and with phosphorus halides and hydrohalic acids to form benzyl halides. Both benzyl halochemicalbook and benzyl alcohol are benzyl (phenylmethyl) chemistry reagents used to give benzyl protecting groups to carboxylic acid and alcohol hydroxyl groups. The benzyl protecting group is easily removed by hydrogenation. In addition, benzyl alcohol is also readily oxidized to benzoic acid by a variety of oxidizing agents, which, if oxidized with nitric acid, can produce either an aldehyde or an acid, depending on the concentration and temperature. When penicillin is injected, benzyl alcohol is often used as an anesthetic to prevent the patient from feeling too much pain, so that the pain is not too intense, hence the name “painless water”. However, a common clinical side effect was soon discovered: gluteus contracture. In 2005, the State Drug Administration banned the use of benzyl alcohol as a solvent for penicillin injections.
