Benzalkonium chloride, a cationic surfactant, is a non-oxidizing bactericide with broad-spectrum and high-efficiency bactericidal and algaecidal ability, which can effectively control the reproduction of bacteria and algae and the growth of slime in water, and has good slime stripping and certain dispersing and penetrating effects, as well as certain oil removal, deodorizing ability, and corrosion inhibition.

It is easily soluble in ethanol and acetone. Although the dissolution rate in water is slow, the aqueous solution is easier to handle so it is still preferred. The aqueous solution should be neutral to slightly alkaline, with color ranging from colorless to light yellow. Aqueous solutions produce foam when shaken, and have a bitter and faint almond taste in concentrated solutions.
