Part 2: In-depth development

Methyl o-ethoxybenzoate is synthesized from methyl salicylate ([119-36-8]) and ethyl iodide, which is then hydrolyzed and acidified to produce methyl o-ethoxybenzoate. Sodium metal, methyl salicylate, and ethyl iodide were added to anhydrous methanol and refluxed for 10 h. The methanol and ethyl iodide was recovered and poured into cold water, and the oil was separated. The oil was washed with water and 5% sodium hydroxide solution to pH=7, extracted with ether, dried with anhydrous sodium carbonate and refluxed with ether, then distilled under reduced pressure to obtain methyl o-ethoxybenzoate. It was added to 5% sodium hydroxide solution and refluxed for 2-3h, cooled, and the unreacted ester was extracted with ether. The extracted aqueous solution is acidified with hydrochloric acid and the oil layer is washed with water. Then add 5% sodium hydroxide to dissolve, filter, and acidify again with hydrochloric acid to remove the oil layer and freeze to crystallize the crude product. The aqueous layer after acidification can be extracted with ether, which can also be used to obtain part of the crude product. The crude product is distilled under reduced pressure to obtain the finished product of o-ethoxy benzoic acid. Used in pharmaceutical intermediates, organic synthesis

Keep the receptacle sealed, store it in a cool, dry place, and ensure that the workroom is well ventilated or exhausted. It should be stored separately from oxidizers, acids, and edible chemicals and should not be mixed.
