Description of Nickel

Nickel is a solid heterogeneous catalyst composed of fine grains of nickel aluminum alloy with porous structure. It was first used as a catalyst by Murray Raney, an American engineer, in the hydrogenation process of vegetable oil. The preparation process is to treat the nickel aluminum alloy with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution. In this process, most of the aluminum will react with sodium hydroxide and dissolve, leaving many micropores of different sizes. Thus, the surface of Raney nickel is fine gray powder, but from the microscopic point of view, each tiny particle in the powder is a three-dimensional porous structure, which greatly increases its surface area and brings high catalytic activity. This makes Raney nickel widely used in organic synthesis and industrial hydrogenation as a heterogeneous catalyst.
