Chemical Structure

Packing of 13-Propanediol

Production
1,3-Propanediol is mainly produced by the hydration of acrolein. Another route involves the hydroformylation of ethylene oxide to form 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde. Subsequent hydroformylation of the aldehyde yields 1,3-propanediol. Biotechnological routes are also known.
Two other routes involve the bioprocessing of certain microorganisms.
DuPont Tate & Lyle BioProducts enables the transformation of glucose by transgenic E. coli strains (see: Bioseparation of 1,3-propanediol). An estimated 120,000 tons were produced in 2007.” According to DuPont, the Bio-PDO process uses 40% less energy than conventional processes, and the American Chemical Society awarded the Bio-PDO research team the “2007 Heroes of Chemistry” award for the successful development of a renewable Bio-PDO process by DuPont and Tate & Lyle.
The process uses Clostridium diolis bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae to convert glycerol (a byproduct of biodiesel production).

What is 13-Propanediol?
- With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, chemical products have invariably permeated our daily lives, in medicine, food, cosmetics, electronics, industry, and other areas, becoming an essential part of our lives. One such product is 13-Propanediol which has developed particularly rapidly in recent years. Do you know about 13-Propanediol?
- The official answer:13-Propanediol (propane-1,3-diol) is a compound with molecular formula C3H8O2 and molecular weight 76.10. It is a colorless transparent viscous liquid. It can be used in the synthesis of many kinds of drugs, new polyester PTT, pharmaceutical intermediates, and new antioxidants.
What’s the application of 13-Propanediol?
Hydroformylation of ethylene oxide: firstly, ethylene oxide is hydroformylation with syngas to HPA, and then hydrogenated to 1,3-PDO. the key of the Shell process is the use of carbonyl cobalt catalyst in the hydroformylation process, and the use of various ligands (such as Chemicalbook diphosphine, tri-hydro phosphine, tri-hydro arsenic, etc.) and additives (tetrabutyl phosphonium acetate, butyl pentyl pyridine, etc.), based on ethylene oxide, the yield of 1,3-PDO can reach 85%-90%, and the product purity can reach 99.6% (mass ratio).
Applications
Colorless or light yellow viscous liquid with slightly irritating salty odor and diluting properties. Miscible with water, ethanol, acetone, chloroform (trichloromethane), ether, and other solvents, insoluble in benzene. Used in organic synthesis, synthesis of many kinds of drugs, and new antioxidants. Antifreeze agent. Solvent. Organic synthesis. Gas chromatography analysis standard. Used in the synthesis of many kinds of drugs, new polyester PTT, pharmaceutical intermediates, and new antioxidants.
